Vegas hot vs. Ivory girl and the divine order of the workplace

I really like my new job. I mean, as much as I'd like any job. It's still not what I'd choose to do with my time if I didn't have to work, but it's truly a nice gig. My boss is a cute young guy who I think I've seen a total of 30 minutes since I started--perfect--and I have an adorable little BFF in the cubicle next to me. (Of course no one compares to my 25-year-old BFF, Joe, from my last job.)

I'm guessing my new friend is in her early 30's, though she could pass for 19. She's a beautiful girl and I don't mean hot-chick Vegas-tits beautiful; I'm talking fresh-air Ivory girl beautiful. Sometimes when she's explaining stuff to me about the project I'm working on, all I can think is, "Do you have any idea how lucky you are?" But I don't think she has a clue that she's gorgeous. She just acts like a sweet, normal girl.

The minute I met her, I thought, "Oh, that's why I'm here," meaning I knew right away we were meant to be friends. And the funny thing is, last week at lunch she expressed that exact sentiment.

I really believe that most of the time work simply provides a structure for the universe to get a bunch of people together; the work itself is secondary, even inconsequential. I've made so many dear friends, people I expect to know for the rest of my life, through the corporate environment. Even though 90 percent of the time I could not give one shit about the work. Doesn't matter--it's all perfect.

I feel incredibly lucky.

How about you? Have you made some friends for life through work?

And given a choice, would you rather be Vegas hot or Ivory girl beautiful?

I know it sounds corny, but I truly believe that certain people are destined to meet. Whether it has to do with fate or some kind of cosmic people alignment, I sure as hell don't know.

What I do know is that I have had several moments in my life such as yours....I'll meet someone and quietly say to myself (or out loud), you're the reason I'm here today!

Just awesome.

When I grow up...I think I would choose to be Linda Lou beautiful. You have a gift. Thanks for sharing it with us :)

Not long ago this subject (making friends quickly) came up at work. The conclusion - women can do it, men usually can't. From a male's perspective I have to ask - ladies, how do you do it, really?

I've got a couple of friends I've made at work that I would do anything for. Like J said above, I also believe some people were destined to meet.

As for the Vegas vs. Ivory beautiful? Vegas is gonna win out on that one with me. I'm shallow like that sometimes...

Just in the last few years to I have friends for life made from work! Wish in my younger years that I would have stayed in touch with some others. I do have a friend that we have been best best frinds since 1968!!!

Yeah, I've made many lifelong friends through work. Mostly in the recent years. I have a group of four other friends from 12 years back when we all worked at Trammell Crow in Austin, and we get together regularly (or, we did until I moved to Florida!). We call ourselves the Hoo-Ha's, and I can't tell you how much life shit we have gotten each other through. I have a few other exceptional friends from my last job, and I do hope we will remain friends to the end. I can't do without friends. Truly, they are lifeblood. And now I'm here in FL without any girl friends. I'm currently isolated, by choice, so that I can write and get novels finished. Time to network, right?

Hate to be the bummer, but I can only count one or two times where I've made good friends at work. And definately not in the last ten years as a "professional".

Perhaps it's just me. As I always ask myself the same question when I meet a new person at work,

"Would this person be my friend if we met outside of work?"

99.9% of the time the answer is no.

On a lighter note, I can't say I've ever thought about actually being a girl, but I can tell which one is more attractive to me - Ivory Girl, hands down.

I love it when you meet a kindred spirit at work or anywhere for that matter. I think that happens when you have an open heart.
I would choose to be ivory girl beautiful every time!
