You tell me: How important is humor in a relationship?

I'm working on what I think will be an amazingly awesome project about humor (I'm not ready to divulge any details yet) and would love to see how you answer the following questions.  Respond to as many as you'd like as a comment, or if you prefer, shoot me an email at linda@bastardhusband.com.

1.  On a scale of 1-5, how do you feel about this statement?
"A person's sense of humor is an important factor when choosing a dating or relationship partner"  (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree)

2.  On a scale of 1-5, how do you feel about this statement?
"A shared sense of humor is an accurate predictor of the success of a relationship."  (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree)

3.  On a scale of 1-5, how do you feel about this statement?
"A good sense of humor can make a person seem more physically attractive."  (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = strongly agree)

4.  Do you:  a) consider yourself to be a funny person, b) consider yourself not particularly funny, but appreciate people who are, c) neither of the two.

5.  Name some of your favorite comedians.

6.  Name some comedians that the rest of the world seems to love, but you don't like at all.

7.  Name some of your favorite comedy movies.

8.  Name some movies that the rest of the world thought was funny, but you didn't.

9.  Name some of your favorite comedy TV shows.

10.  Name some shows that rest of the world thinks is funny, but not you.

Thank you!  I can't wait to see what you have to say.

Interesting to see how subjective comedy is.

Seinfeld, Mike--really? You're probably going to hell for that. But I agree about SNL post 1980.

I know, Linda. I've already prepared myself for my journey into hell for all eternity. But I have this gene, you know, that won't quite allow me to laugh at something I don't think is funny (is there no end to my heresy?).

I had a girlfriend a few years ago who forced me to watch about a dozen episodes of SEINFELD. I found the four main characters one- and two-dimensional, all of them whiners, all of them utterly predictable. Their punch line delivery was very old school (except for Seinfeld himself) and the supporting characters were all stereotypes.

The show prided itself on being "about nothing", which was actually a pretty slick marketing gimmick to reel in non-sitcom watchers. I remember another show that was "about nothing". It was called THE ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET. In that show, they could do 20 minutes on Ozzie's tie. In its time it was as big as SEINFELD and was on the air for much longer. Look at it today. You'd want to throw up, wondering how anyone could've watched it, even then (except maybe to see Ricky sing at the end).

SEINFELD was, IMHO, vastly overrated and will not hold up in the future. Excuse me now, I think Satan is calling.

1. 5, how can you cry with someone if you can’t laugh with them?

2. 3 overall (I will clarify by saying the ability to laugh at one’s self is the only accurate predictor of anything)

3. 3, it shows a certain vulnerability

4. A

5. Very Old School: Lucille Ball, George Burns & Gracie Allen, Lewis & Martin, Mel Brooks, Carol Burnett & Peter Sellars (I actually like physical humor/slapstick). Newer Old School: George Carlin, Robin Williams, John Belushi, Steve Martin, Catherine Tate, Dawn French & Eddie Izzard.

6. Marx Brothers, Will Ferrell, Arseno Hall, Paul Reubans & the Seinfeld crew.

7. Arsenic & Old Lace, Philadelphia Story/High Society, the “Road Pictures”, It’s a Mad Mad Mad World, Little Shop of Horrors, Young Frankenstein, & TheBlues Brothers.

8. Anything with Adam Sandler, Sideways, The Hangover, The Big Lewbowski, & Pineapple Express.
9. I Love Lucy, very early days of SNL, Vicar of Dibley, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, MASH, Red Green Show, The Muppet’s, Murphy Brown & Bob Newhart (both).

10. Larry Shandling Show, The Office (American version), Friends, Seinfeld, Sex in the City, & Everybody Loves Raymond

Swamped at work so no time to answer in detail, but yes you know how important laughter and a sense of humor is in a relationship to me!

If you can not joke around with your boyfriend or girlfriend then it is not good. I joke around with my boyfriend a lot in our relationship. I like to joke around. My boyfriend knows if I am not joking around I am not feeling good or something is really wrong with me. I love to tease him. He does the same thing to me.

1, 4, because nothing is a 5 except sex.

2. 4, read above.

6. Chelsea Handler, Chapelle, John Stewart and the Jersey Shore clan!

7.Bridesmaids, Meet the Parents, anything with John Candy, Chris Farley, Steve Martin OR Ben Stiller...Airplane, and Trains, Planes and Automobiles.

**Factoid for ya, I went to H.S. with Will Ferrell, same graduating class/86 and I like his early stuff...Freshman Algebra, Spanish 2, and the limo we shared for prom. My old boyfriend and he were good friends, so we often double dated.
