Am I getting prudish on you?

Okay, I'd love to know your opinion.  This is a real live Halloween costume for kids that's in the stores like Target and K-Mart right now.

Personally, I think this is creepy, Jon-Benet-ish.  "Sweet li'l treat" for whom???  I asked Mike what the hell this costume is supposed to be anyway, and he said, "I don't know.  A sexy witch?"

The costumed pictured is a size Small, which means it's intended to fit a 5-year-old.  Since when is a sexy ANYTHING an appropriate costume for a child?  The kid modeling it looks like a junior cocktail waitress; I can just picture this mini-Mae West sashaying through the race and sports book at Green Valley Ranch or flirting with the guys at the poker table.  Seriously, I'm surprised it doesn't come with a padded underwire, garter belt and a theater length cigarette holder.

Kids are already bombarded with sex in the media, and especially here in Las Vegas.  If you drive at all near the Strip, you'll see tons of cleavaged billboards and if you're really lucky, you'll pull up behind a taxi with a row of thonged asses staring back at you.  Lovely.

So why encourage this sort of dress-up in young, make that very young girls?  Am I turning prudish or just getting old?  What do you think about this?

Somethings, like this, are just wrong, and if no one buys it, stuff like this will go away.

This is not just in the big cities it by us too. I would have never bought anything like that for my kids. This is going way to far already and I do not like what they are doing to the kids these days.

They put this out for the kids and wonder why there are so many teenagers having kids. This is the reason why. They need to think before putting things like this out for the kids.

As my son would say "That's just WRONG"

I think if they ditch the choker and make sleeves it's okay.

But I hear on the sex stuff. Jersey Shore is all I'm gonna say. GASP

No, you're right, it's pretty creepy. It seems pervasive in Halloween costumes in general these days. For adult female costumes, it's always a slut version of a cop, nurse or whatever. Now, don't get me wrong, I love me a good slut now and then, but some variety would be nice. But for kids costumes? No, it's pretty messed up.

I think you are becoming prudish. The way a child dresses is *up to the parents*. The 5yo is not going to hop in the car, drive over to Target and pick up this costume and pay for it at check out. The parent is.

So if the parent in all of their wisdom believes this is appropriate for their child, well, not much can be done about that.

Please, please, pleaes...let's not regulate what costumes are available at Halloween. Let's keep decisions for kids in parents hands come Halloween.

Raising children in Las Vegas - I think 'sex' is such a part of the culture there that one must know what they are getting themselves into by raising their kids there...so cleavage or thongs on billboards is to be expected isn't it?

Fair enough, Jay. And I agree that the decision is ultimately up to the parents--as R Jacob said, if no one buys them, they'll go away.

My guess is that the young girls are demanding this. No, they can't drive themselves to Target, but they want it when they see this displayed. I have to wonder about the marketers. Somewhere there was a meeting where a bunch a people sat around a table and agreed that this would be an appropriate costume for a child. Correction: They agreed that a costume like this would sell. Again, that's where the parents come in.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to let the hems down in all my skirts...

Big deal. Little girls have been playing dress-up for generations. So what? A pearl necklace, a feathered boa, I'll bet you wore things like that when you were a little girl.

Little girls who have mothers who actually are cocktail waitresses realize its just a job. Its a costume. It doesn't condemn her to a life of being a burlesque queen or cocktail waitress. It gives her a night of fun.

I do remember dressing up as a kid, but not with such sexual overtones.

Appreciate your comment.

Linda, you are not getting prudish. You are seeing, as so many of us, the sad reality of sexualizing little girls ... everyone wants to dance like Beyonce, bump and grind ... sick. Remember when Madonna came onto the scene and little girls the world over wanted to look like her? It is 2011 and the sexualization and objectication of girls continues. For all that Gloria Steinam and her ilk tried to accomplish it seems it was all for naught. Like one of your other commenters said ... all you have to do is look at the success of Jersey Shore. UGH.

SMOOCHES!

Quite frankly all this jabber about sexualizing little girls and perceiving danger in dance steps or clothing styles makes me think of Abbie Hoffman of long ago. When bus operators would take suburban residents around New York City's East-Village to see weird people there was sure to be this bare-footed, bearded Abbie Hoffman running alongside the bus and holding up a large mirror for the bus passengers to look into. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... and so is filth! If you see sexualization in some little girl's costumes or dance steps then I think you should be directing your gaze into Abbie Hoffman's mirror.

And there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that in any way suggests the intruder who tortured and killed JonBenet Ramsey was even aware of, much less motivated by, the fact that she had appeared in pageants, parades and dance recitals.
